KIDS (ages 7 - 12)
Maybe you have witnessed how your child’s mood was lifted or settled when they listen to music… or maybe your son or daughter has demonstrated a fascination with the sounds different instruments make… or maybe they have been captivated watching music videos on TV or YouTube. Or maybe you played when you were younger and regret not continuing and wish something better for your son or daughter.
These are all terrific reasons for giving your child the gift of music. But there are also additional benefits when your son or daughter learns to play an instrument.
Imagine your son or daughter five, ten, or even fifteen years from now. They are responsible, organised, and focused. They have developed discipline and patience. They work well with others, are reliable, adaptable, curious, and creative. They are resourceful, can handle stress well, confident in their own abilities, and know how to bounce back from disappointment or even failure.
Playing music introduces your son or daughter to other cultures and learn to appreciate different traditions and values. Playing music is also an amazing stress reliever as well as a healthy way to express feelings they quite don’t know how to process. When your son or daughter learns to play a simple piece of music, they also achieve a sense of fulfilment.
Music education also contributes to the cognative development of your child. Several studies have highlighted how music education has increased the overall IQ scores of students, improved working memory, increase verbal intelligence, as well as strengthen the communication between the right and left sides of the brain, enhancing creativity and problem solving skills.
Finally, playing music is just fun. It is a great past time and a gift of a lifetime.
Private music lessons are an extension of your son or daughter's education. Students are not simply entertained. They develop a skillset that can not only be entertaining and a wonderful pasttime activity, it supports their learning in other subjects. Over the course of their music lessons, students will learn:
A wide range of repertoire associated with the classical and acoustic guitar
Basic aural skills and musicianship
Music notation literacy
Good body posture
Proper left- and right-hand technique
An understanding of the basic history of the guitar

For all prospective students, I offer a free 30-minute consultation. It will give you and your son or daughter an opportunity to meet me and check out my studio, hear about what I offer and gauge whether it meets your interests for your child. The consultation lesson will also give me the opportunity to learn a little more about your son or daughter, assess their readiness for lessons, and make recommendations regarding an instrument.
I ENJOY WORKING WITH ALL AGES AND LEVELS . . .

If you have acquired a certain level of musicianship, music reading skills, and technical proficiency (equivalent to RCM grade 3 - 7) but lack the training to tackle the repertoire you really want to learn to play, you can find out more here.
If you are an advanced student (equivalent to RCM grade 8 or above) and want to elevate your playing to that next level, or you're considering studying music at a university or conservatory and want to prepare yourself for post-secondary studies, you can find out more here!
“I like Don’s guitar classes because when I am sad, he makes me feel better, and he wrote a song for me to play (on the guitar).”
LFAS | Guitar Novice
I welcome students ages 7 and older into my studio.
The best way to determine if your child is ready for weekly private music instruction is to simply observe how he/she reacts when music is being played and, in particular, their interest level when they hear or see the guitar being played.
No matter how enthusiastic your child is initially about learning to play the guitar, there comes a point in time when your son or daughter simply doesn’t feel like practicing. It happens to all of us! When it does, first and foremost, try to make it fun! On tough days, don't feel guilty if you need to bribe them. Having a specific goal to achieve is also important. It is not about how much time they practice but supporting them to achieve a specific goal that has been set for them. If they reach their goal in 5 minutes, great! If it takes them 15 minutes, that is just as good. In other words, it is not about the amount of time they put in but reaching a goal or completing a task. Experiencing progress goes a long ways in staving off boredom and procrastination.
